How To Choose Party Games for Large Groups

Knowing which party games to choose for large groups can be the difference in a successful or a failed party. When you have a large group of people invited to your parties, certain great games just aren’t suited to the crowd.

So when you decide to host a party for bigger crowds of people, you have to take into account that you have to entertain a lot of people with the game, the game has to fit within a certain time frame and your game has to be played over the general buzz of a party-sized crowd of people.

With all that in mind, here is how to choose party games for large groups.

1. Tournaments

Tournaments work great for large groups at parties. The tournament style party game can involve all sorts of games, especially card games. Your choices aren’t confined to card games, though. Think of any game you’ve heard of being played at a bar and it’s probably appropriate for a party: billiards, shuffleboard or darts. (Darts is a little unsteady at a party of amateur drinkers, if there’s alcohol involved. Pick games for the crowd you’re with.)

Rummy or spades are good games to play with large groups, since the winners can go to one table and losers go to another. One popular game of the last few years that is fun for large parties is the poker game known as Texas Holdem. Everyone has a $10 entry fee or somesuch and the winner takes home the whole pot. Everyone has seen the knuckleheads on tv playing in Texas Hold’em tournaments, so now you and your friends can be those knuckleheads.

2. Charades

Charades are a nice option for big parties. When you play charades, people get to stand up, gesticulate wildly and generally laugh at the funny poses and gestures being made. Some people are going to shine; other people are going to have a great time laughing at the silliness.

If someone brings a dry-erase board or a blackboard, you can play a variant of charades, where you draw pictures instead of make gestures. This is essentially the board game Pictionary, which is another nice option.

3. The Game of Secrets

This one is similar to one of the great board games of our times: Loaded Questions. The only difference is that it doesn’t use a game board and you can have a huge throng play secrets.

Everyone in the game takes a scrap piece of paper and write a little known fact or secret about themself, something no one at the party should know. Collect the secrets on a sheet of paper and place a blank on the paper by each secret.

Then pass out the sheets (nice to have a copy machine) and have everyone write down the name of the person they think is associated with each secret. Get in a group, reveal the secrets and have a good laugh. Whoever makes the most correct guesses, wins a prize.

4. Have a Murder Mystery

There are all kinds of murder mystery games that people can host for dinner parties, usually for 8 or more players. These can be customized these days at online sites that specialize in murder mystery dinners, tailoring the game for a specific time period, setting, number of players or type of murder. One person hosts and everyone else tries to guess who the murderer is.

5. Bingo

Games like Bingo can also be played for large groups. Pretty much any game that caters to a large crowd of people or is known for drawing party-sized crowds can be played at parties. When trying to choose party games for a large crowd, try to think of the type of games your friends have enjoyed in the past.
