School Carnival Games

School Fundraiser Games

School carnival games are played at local school fundraisers, along with face painting, prize booths and silent auctions. In these kind of PTA and student activities, school carnival games are the centerpiece of the attractions, because they draw crowds of parents wanting to see their kids having fun.

There are so many school carnival activities I could name, I’m sure I’ll leave a few out. These make great fundraising events, because the kids can have fun and the parents can donate a little money by purchasing tickets to the games.

Generally, the parents will have some entertainment, too, since they can see their children interacting with other kids and having a great time.

At the Races

All this game requires is a long strip of paper like you would make for banners. Draw lanes on the paper with numbers at the end. The “track” doesn’t have to be too long. I would suggest about 8-10 paces (for a child) long. The race track needs to fit six kids wide.

Next, purchase a cheap foam die (or dice). The numbers on the die will correspond to the 1 through 6 lanes you paint on the paper. This is how you determine the winner of the race. When a “2″ comes up on the dice, have the child in Lane 2 move one space forward. When a “5″ comes up, having the racer in Lane 5 move up. In this way, everyone has a fair chance to win the prize. I would suggest playing up the roll of the foam die to keep the kids excited.

Knock Down the Cans

Set up six aluminum or plastic cans in a 3-2-1 pyramid. Then get three balls (tennis balls work nice) and have the children throw at the can pyramid. If they can knock over all the cans in 3 shots or less, they get a prize. I would suggest bringing multiple sets of cans and balls, so you can have multiple people playing this game at once. Remember to set the cans up eye high for the kiddies.

Duck Pond War

Bring a small plastic swimming pool. Fill the pool with water to a moderate level. Bring a rubber duck and a couple of squirt guns. Give two kids a squirt gun apiece and have them get on each side of the pool. Place the rubber duck in the dead center of the plastic swimming pond. The goal of the kids is to use the squirt gun to shoot the rubber duck or just behind the rubber duckie, forcing it to propel across the pool to the other side. The first one to get the duck to touch the opposite side of the pond wins.

Hoopla

Gets some stuffed animals or large plastic toy animals. Then bring hoops (small for harder games; large hoola hoops for easy games) and have kids try to toss the hoops on the toys or stuffed animals to win them as a prize. The rule is the hoop must completely cover the prize to win. Knocking it over doesn’t count, though you’ll want to bind the animal to a hoopla stick to make sure that doesn’t happen with every toss.

Horseshoes

Horsehoes are a similar option. A kid has to get at least one ringer to get a prize. Have someone bring a set of plastic horseshoes from the house to make this safer. This is a simple one to play, but lots of fun and a pretty good challenge.

Dunking Booth

If you have a handiman or engineer around the school or PTA, have them make a dunking booth. Kids love nothing more than to see their parents and teachers dunked in a tub of water. Get three baseballs and have the kids throw baseballs to spring the dunking mechanism.

Pie Throwing

If the dunking booth doesn’t work out, have a few of your principals and teachers volunteer for a pie throwing stand. Kids love a food fight better than anything else, because it’s pure chaos. All you do is get some aluminum pie plates and fill them up with cheap whipping cream. You don’t actually have to bake pies for the occasion, as that would be an awful waste.

Bingo

Bingo is a fun game that can be enjoyed by kids from 8 to 80 years old. Bingo is good for big crowds of people. It’s also a good rest for those who have been playing or standing all afternoon. Besides, you give away one prize and get lots of entries.

Bouncing Castle – Inflatable Castle

One of the staples of the school carnival is the inflatable bounce castle. While no game or competition goes on in these funhouses, kids love them. I would suggest you have an inflatable castle at your school fundraiser, since it attracts attention and looks so darned fun. Inflatable castles don’t cost too much to rent for the afternoon and most towns have someone with a bouncing castle business these days.

While this is a chance for kids to have a good time bouncing around, you can charge a small fee for children to play in the fun house. This offsets the cost and is within the spirit of the school carnival atmosphere, assuming you are raising money for some kind of charity or student activity.

Haunted House

Haunted houses aren’t just for Halloween anymore. You might not want to include a haunted house for younger kids or for areas that are particularly uptight about supernatural themes (rural areas), but if you include a haunted house, it will bring a lot of excitement. The male teachers and parents will enjoy volunteering at it, too.

General Rule of Thumb: If you’ve ever heard anyone in your town or area say something like, “I don’t know about that Harry Potter. Seems it’s all about witches,” then take that as a sign you shouldn’t put in the haunted house with occult themes. (I live in Texas; I swear, it happens.)

Balloon Animals

Hire a professional clown to entertain the kids with balloon animals. Most kids love clowns, at least those that aren’t terrified of them. All kids love balloon animals.

Fortune Tellers

Have your principal and other school administrators dress up like swamis and fortune tellers. Then have them hand out specially outfitted fortune cookies at a booth. You can order special messages for fortune cookies, and you can probably have the local Chinese restaurant place the order (and maybe donate fortune cookies to the event). This lets the kids see their school administrators during a time of fun, wearing wacky costumes.

  3. I am in agreement with exactly what anybody has explained, the important and vital element is to look at this from a diverse standpoint (as I carry out most of the period). Other than that, you’ve got got a fairly very good weblog right here, keep up the very good work.
