I don’t LARP but have known some who do. You got it on how the movie failed to explain to the average viewer what the motivation is. I mean, I’ve made fun of people for LARPing, but I only did it in jest and self-mockery while I was sitting at a D&D table with them.

On an episode of Beauty and the Geek, they all go LARPing. It starts out of course with some of the beauties thinking it’s going to be stupid, but by the end they said they had a lot of fun and want to do it again. All the makers of this movie had to do was put in something similar.

I mean, let’s take Elizabeth. Costumed up and plays World of Warcraft. All sorts of people play WoW. I know doctors etc who play, and, how ironic, also a rather successful documentary filmmaker who plays nearly every day. His main focus was shooting documentaries about the shadow workings of the CIA in third-world countries. …and then he goes and plays WoW.

Famous people play dress-up all the time. They’re called actors.

Anyway, the last two sentences in your review sum up my thoughts pretty well.

Hey!

One left out is the wonderful sci-fi/fantasy old RPG classic of “Skyrealms of Jorune”, and btw where’s “Harnmaster”??? That’s one you wouldn’t want to miss ever. And also, “Trail of Cthulhu”, a very interesting version on the Cthulhu-setting, that one’s missing. Well, that’s the ones I could think of right now (apart from the wonderful “Mutant, Undergangens Arvtagare”, the Swedish all-time favourite of mine.

I own/have owned 15 of the games listed, and have probably tried another 5-10. Interesting!
