In today’s day and age, chess is one of the most popular games in the world. This is saying quite a bit considering the fact that there are thousands of games out there. Millions of people from one side of the world to the next play the game in a number of different forms and variations. This includes everything from chess clubs to chess tournaments and much more. Of course, chess is fun, but this is not the only reason that people play. It is believed that the game takes a high level of mental capacity in order to succeed.

Chess is played on a board that is square in shape, and full of checkered blocks. In most cases, all except for electronic versions, there are two players in a game of chess. One player takes the black pieces whereas the other is white. There are 32 pieces, with each player controlling 16. They include: eight pawns, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, one queen, and one king. The main object of the game is quite simple, although there are many details that make it anything but that. As a player, your main goal is to checkmate the other player’s king. To checkmate means that the opposition’s king is under attack, and there is no way that it can be moved during the next play.

Over the years, many players have spent hour after hour coming up with chess strategies and tactics. Although there are many strategies that can be used, there is no cut and dry way of ensuring success. This is why it is thought that the game of chess is one of mental prowess.

All in all, the game of chess will always be one of the most popular games in the world. People from all over compete against other players as well as computers. For anybody who is interested in a game of smarts, chess is a great place to start.
