Information about the Clue Movie

The Clue movie was a film released in 1985 loosely based on the Clue board game. It was released as a comedy with a few well-known actors, including Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry and Martin Mull, but did rather poorly at the box office. It was then released on cable movie stations where it did much better. Today it has somewhat of a cult following and is still available. Originally released in VHS format, the Clue movie has been available on DVD since 2000. The film was directed by Jonathan Lynn, written by John Landis and Jonathan Lynn and produced by Debra Hill. Here are the main cast members in alphabetical order.

Plot of the Clue Movie

Unlike the Clue board game where Mr. Boddy is killed by one of the six main characters before the game starts, in the movie the six characters are all being blackmailed by Mr. Boddy. There are also people involved in the movie who aren't in the board game. They include a butler, maid, singing telegram girl, police officer, motorist and cook. Boddy does get killed in the movie but all of the other actors also find their lives in danger at one time or another during the film. This makes for many interesting twists in the film.

The reasons for the blackmail vary by character. Mr. Green is portrayed as a homosexual that is employed by the government and will be fired if they find out about his sexual preferences, Colonel Mustard is a thief and also has used a prostitution/call girl service, Mrs. Peacock is married to a senator and accepts dirty money for him, Professor Plum is a working doctor who has had his license suspended because of unprofessional conduct with a former patient, Miss Scarlet is the head of a call girl service, Mrs. White is suspected of killing each of her five ex-husbands and the butlers dead wife had socialist dealings.

The Clue film has many interwoven story lines and plots that unfold as the film advances. The character of Yvette used to be a prostitute working for Miss Scarlet and had Colonel Mustard as a client as well as at least one of Mrs. White's ex husbands and probably Mr. Boddy as well and the police officer in the film accepted bribes from Miss Scarlet to look the other way about her business. Professor Plum's patient that lead to his loss of his license was the singing telegram girl, Mrs. Peacock once employed the maid and Colonel Mustard's driver during his tour in the war turns out to be the stranded motorist.

The weapons used in the board game are incorporated into the movie. They are used both as gifts to the six main characters given by Mr. Boddy and each weapon also kills one of the characters, but is not always used to kill by the person who first received it. The revolver was given to Professor Plum and used to kill the singing telegram girl in the Hall. The wrench was used to kill the motorist in the lounge and given to Colonel Mustard. Mrs. Peacock received the knife / dagger and it was used to kill the cook in the kitchen. The candle stick was used to kill Mr. Boddy in the hall and given to Miss Scarlet. The rope was used to murder Yvette in the billiard room and was a gift to Mrs. White. Mr. Green received the lead pipe as a present and it was used to murder the policeman in the library.

There were four different endings filmed for the original movie, but only three of them were released at the time. Movie theaters chose one of the three endings when they showed the film, some even advertising which ending they would be using. The television shows that followed usually played all three endings one after the other at the end of the film and the VHS release did this as well. The DVD release has all three endings and allows the user / watcher to choose which ending he or she wants to watch or will pick one at random.
