Clue the Television Show - Cluedo TV

Clue had a television show based on the board game on British TV from 1989 through 1994 and an Australian version from 1992 to 1993. It was named Cluedo, which is still the name of the board game the European countries and was the original name of the game when it was invented in the 1940's. The shorter version of Clue is mainly used for the board game in North America.

In the British version of the Cluedo television show, six suspects named after the board game suspects participated on the show. Celebrity guests asked the six suspects questions trying to determine which suspect was guilty, which weapon they used and in which room the crime was committed. An interesting trivia is that the weapons did not always match the ones made famous by the board game. Also, the only suspect who could lie while being questioned was the guilty party.

Season one aired in 1989 and was presented / commentated by James Bellini. There were six episodes staring Stephanie Beacham as Mrs. Peacock, Robin Ellis as Colonel Mustard, Robin Newell as Reverend Green, Kristoffer Tabori as Professor Plum, Tracy Louise Ward as Miss Scarlet and June Whitfield as Mrs. White. The weapons used in season one were poison (which was used twice), a statue, a bridge trophy, a tie, and an antique sword.

Season two was aired in 1991 and commentated by Chris Tarrant. Starring in the six episodes were Michael Jayston as Colonel Mustard, Rula Lenska as Mrs. Peacock, David McCallum as Professor Plum, Koo Stark as Miss Scarlet, Mollie Sugden as Mrs. White and Richard Wildon as Reverend Green. The weapons used in season two were a kettle flex, sharpening steel, rope, lead pipe, knife and a funeral urn.

In 1992 Season three also contained six episodes and they were commentated / presented by Richard Madeley. Lysette Anthony starred as Miss Scarlet, Tom Baker starred as Professor Plum, Christopher Biggins starred as Reverend Green, Lewis Collins starred as Colonel Mustard, Pam Ferris starred as Mrs. White and Susan George starred as Mrs. Peacock. Weapons used in season three were scissors, a dagger, croquet mallet, spear, insecticide and a sword.

The final season, season four, aired in 1993 and 1994. It was once again hosted by Richard Madeley and once again contained an entirely new cast. The stars were John Bird as Professor Plum, Leslie Grantham as Colonel Mustard, Jerry Hall as Miss Scarlet, Joanna Lumley as Mrs. Peacock, Nicholas Parsons as Reverend Green and Liz Smith as Mrs. White. In the fourth season the weapons that were used were a dagger, g-string, ice pick, desktop lighter, decanter stopper and a microphone.

There was also a Christmas special in 1990 that was a single episode, unlike the other four years which each contained six episodes. The Cluedo Christmas television special was narrated / hosted by James Bellini and starred Ian Lavender as Professor Plum, Derek Nimmo as Reverend Green, Kate O"Mara as Mrs. Peacock, David Robb as Colonel Mustard, Joan Simms as Mrs. White and Toyah Willcox as Miss Scarlet. The weapon used in the Christmas special was a knife.

The Australian version of Cluedo aired in 1992 and 1993. It was much like the British version with the exception that the studio audience questioned the suspects and voted on who they thought was guilty. Jane Badler starred as Mrs. Peacock, Andrew Daddo starred as Professor Plum, Frank Gallacher starred as detective Bogong, George Mallaby starred as Colonel Mustard, Nicki Paull starred as Miss Scarlet, Peter Sumner starred as Reverend Green and Joy Westmore starred as Mrs. White.
