Canasta

How to Play CanastaAlthough the card game of Canasta is not one that is common in casinos, it does have a large following of people from all over the world. Most believe that Canasta got its beginning in Uruguay in 1939. Additionally, it is widely known that the game began to spread quickly, and in no time at all it was being played in Argentina, and eventually the entire United States. Canasta became so popular in the 1950’s that it was just about on par with Bridge as far as the top card game was concerned. Obviously, this is saying a lot considering how many people play the game of Bridge on a regular basis.

Throughout the first five to ten years of Canasta, the rules changed quite a bit. But by the early 1950’s, players in North America had standardized the rules, and they were the same then as they are today. While there are many variations, “Classic Canasta” has pretty much stayed the same over the past 50 years or so. To go along with this, American players generally favor a version of the game known as “Modern American Canasta.” There are several big differences between Classic Canasta and Modern American Canasta. There is no way of saying which version is better; it depends on the rules that you prefer.

How to Play Canasta

Generally speaking, Canasta is best played with four people who form two partnerships. But with that being said, there are variations of the game that are meant for two or three players. These may not be as popular as the four player game, but when you do not have enough participants, you may have to rely on one of these variations.

Even though Canasta does not have a long history like other card games, it has gained in popularity year after year. With so many variations to play, it is safe to say that most players, regardless of location, can find a form of Canasta that suits their needs.
