Pinochle Dealing and Bidding

There are many parts of a pinochle game that you need to become familiar with. Once you know these important phases of the game, you will then be able to move onto worrying about how you can win. The first thing that you should know, for obvious reasons, is how the dealing process works. The deal is the first thing that takes place within each pinochle hand, and for this reason, you need to know this to get started.

To start off, the players at the table choose a dealer. There is no specific way of doing this, so feel free to elect anybody who is willing and able to fulfill this duty. For many, the game of pinochle is one of habits and rituals. Many people have their own special way of choosing a dealer, and over time you will do the same thing.

Once a dealer is chosen, he or she will then shuffle the cards in order to make sure that they are appropriately mixed. As you are probably aware of, this is quite similar to the way that other card games are also played. The deck is then placed to the right of the dealer, and the player on that side will then cut it.

Next, the dealer picks up the cards and begins to hand them out starting on the left. As long as each player receives 12 cards, in a four person game of course, it does not matter how you deal them. Some people will do this one at a time, others three at a time, etc.

The next thing that you should be familiar with is the bid. The winner of the bid gets to take advantage of three rights.

  1. to name trump
  2. to get cards from their partner
  3. to lead the first trick

The player that is seated to the dealers left has the first chance to bid. The minimum starting bid is 250 points. From there, bids are increased by 10 points at a time.

When the bid reaches you, there are several things that you can do.

  1. Raise the previous bid by 10 points.
  2. Raise the previous bid by 20 points; known as a jump bid.
  3. You can pass, which means that you will be out of the bidding war for that round.
  4. You can pass with help. This means that you are not allowed to bid, but can assist your partner. This rule is not played in every variation of the game so make sure of it before you start.

When everybody else has passed, the only person left is the one who has won the bid. At this point the bid is written down.

Once the bidder has named trump, their partner chooses four cards in which to send across the table. At that point, you select four cards and then send them to your partner, face down of course. These can be some of the same cards that you just received.
